FOR A MOMENT FREEDOM
Written by Qosay Abusharkh
I left my seat in Fram Kino in the Glass house “ the most famous place in Bodø in Norway”.. Filled with hope and upset .. joy and anger .. rest and agitation. I spent two hours of interest and excitations in a complicated drama and comedy movie from Austria.. sorry from Iran.. oh! Sorry again from Kurdistan.
Kurdistan is not the main title of the film even it deserves to be. Also Iran’s dictatorship is not at the top priority of the genius director of the film. But for sure it is the tragic conditions of the refugees all over the world; even though he took the Kurdish Iranian's cases, they could be from Gaza, Somali or from Damascus, as well representative samples.
The director succeeded to touch our hearts, we are the refugees firstly, but I am sure he succeeded to let many Norwegians cry from hearts and sorrow for that frozen child in the mountain, especially when his uncle burned his shirt to give the life to such a weak body.
We cried; not because the majority of us had been experienced similar situations; and also the Norwegians cried not because they understand very well the meaning of “I am freezing” from a child; BUT because this case will not be the last case... as long as no one can stop those bloody killers all over the world.
I feel the pain in my heart again when the director succeeded to send a strong scream in the faces of the decision-makers at the ministries of interior in the civilized countries through the quiet smile of Abass before execution.
The execution of Abass was not the peak point of tragedy in this story, but it was the brave heart of Hassan’s wife when she took the historical decision to return back and continue her husband’s struggle. The almost tragedy was shown throughout the great contradictions inside this poor and great women. When the feeling of anger defeated the natural feeling of humans to have a safe life!

She got the visa, but she kicked it out because it's price was very high and couldn't be afforded .. it was the blood of her husbands. The director sent another scream in our faces .. sorry in their faces.. those in the UN's offices.
The director is a professional political Kurdish man also. He diagnosed that the change begins at home and he sent another strong message to those Kurdish freedom fighters inside Iran, Irak, … to survive in their places as long as they are able to resist.
The scene with hanging the swan outside the window was not a comedic one as much as a professional political indirect one.. may he want to tell us .. sorry to tell them in Turkey that: “if we will become hungry then may be we will rob to eat, but if you will push us so much .. then the feathers of the hanged swan will pollute the whole city.”
Finally I was not surprised to read the following decision of Vienna Film Prize in 2008:
«On the basis of a majority decision the 2008 Vienna Film Prize is awarded to the feature film 'For a Moment Freedom' by Arash T. Riahi.»
